An Introduction to Medicare Health Insurance Plans

Medicare is a government health insurance program in the US. This program provides its health insurance benefits to those who are over 65 years of age, individuals who have disabilities, and those with permanent kidney failure who are in need of kidney dialysis and/or kidney transplant. There are different parts to Medicare, known as Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. You can learn more about Medicare below.

Basics of Medicare

Medicare will cover a large amount of your approved health services and other related expenses. Once you have met your deductible, then your Medicare kicks in and will begin covering your costs. However, you will still be responsible to pay your share of costs.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A will cover things like a person's hospital stay, home health services, and end-of-life care. Part A covers the necessities, such as semi-private rooms, meals, and the necessary treatments. Part A won't cover extras the patient may wish for, such as a private room and fast food from an outside restaurant.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is the portion of Medicare that covers necessary doctor's services. Some examples of these things can include necessary visits to doctors and other health care providers, wellness exams, physical therapy, lab services, necessary imaging like X-Rays and MRIs, outpatient mental health care, medical equipment, and visits to the emergency room. This part of Medicare can also cover some prescriptions that aren't self-administered.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is also referred to as Medicare Advantage. It is an alternative to the original Medicare program. This is when private companies offer Medicare Advantage plans which have been approved by Medicare. These plans will be bundled with the other parts of Medicare, such as Part A and Part B. This allows the patient to still receive the benefits of A and B, while also getting the additional benefits that cover many of the things those plans don't.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is the prescription portion of Medicare. Part D will cover approved prescription medications. It will also cover suggested and approved vaccinations. Part D can sometimes be bundled in Medicate Advantage plans as well.
